Using Natural Ingredients to Nurture the Skin

Nov 03, 2022

Natural ingredients feel more skin-friendly than artificially produced chemical ingredients. Skin is porous and absorbs a lot of what is applied to it and what is around the environment. Want to use skincare that doesn’t contain harmful chemicals and that will also protect the skin from harmful environmental irritants and free radicals?

This is our introduction to the top natural skincare ingredients found in most of the best performing products.

Moisturisers

 Coconut Oil

Lauric acid, the main saturated fat in coconut oil, works as a natural anti-aging ingredient. The high concentration of fatty lipids improves the skin’s barrier, and provides hydration and moisturisation, making the skin supple. Coconut oil is also a natural emollient since it not only provides hydration but also maintains it. This makes it a perfect treatment for dry skin conditions like eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis.

Grapeseed oil

Grapeseed oil keeps the skin hydrated but also works as a natural anti-inflammatory. Antioxidants in grapeseed oil help to fight against free radicals, and linoleic acid helps to reduce acne.

Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil was used historically to treat wounds, but it has many incredible skincare applications. It is easily absorbed into the skin and an effective balancing agent for the skin’s natural oils, making it an ideal treatment for dermatitis and psoriasis. It is also effective at reducing acne due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and it doesn’t clog pores. It also happens to contain one of the best natural anti-aging ingredients, vitamin E, which protects against sun damage and reduces the appearance of scars and marks on skin.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is a stand-out natural moisturiser for being an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that has emollient properties. Not only does it moisturise the skin, but it also protects the skin from harmful environmental factors. It is excellent for treating a number of skin conditions such as sunburns, blemishes, eczema, and dermatitis.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the body and skin. With age, natural levels of hyaluronic acid drop, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. Using skincare products with hyaluronic acid helps to replenish it back to optimum levels, so it can continue to fight against the signs of aging. It also happens to be an excellent moisturiser, keeping the skin hydrated by locking in moisture, and it helps to skin heal quicker.

Beeswax

While beeswax is not a natural moisturiser in itself, when added to skin lotions, it acts as a surfactant. This helps to seal in moisture and create a protective barrier against irritants while still letting the skin breathe. It also has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-microbial properties.

Antioxidants and anti-inflammatories

Chamomile

Most famous for its effective anti-inflammatory properties, chamomile has the ability to penetrate into the deepest layers of skin. It is a popular natural treatment for eczema, skin irritations, and rashes as it both increases and strengthens the skin’s ability to heal wounds.

Green Tea

Green tea is a known antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and even anticarcinogenic. When used in skincare, it repairs sun damage and protects skin from free radicals. Polyphenols found in green tea also have the potential to slow the process of aging through preventing skin degradation.

Vitamin C

Also known as L-ascorbic acid, vitamin C is a strong antioxidant with effective anti-aging properties. It assists in the repair of sun-damaged skin and stimulates collagen production, helping to maintain skin elasticity and plumpness. It has even been shown to inhibit the production of melanin and skin cancer cells, leading to a more even-looking skin tone and healthier skin overall.

Pearl Powder

Pearl powder has been used in Chinese beauty routines for centuries. It contains 17 skin loving amino acids, calcium, and other minerals. This powerful mix gives it anti-aging properties, speeds up acne healing and improves blemishes. It has gained popularity in skincare as it also lightens skin tone.

Zinc Oxide

A naturally occurring mineral used in sunscreen and sunblock lotions. It is one of the safest ingredients to protect the skin from UV rays. It also helps to speed up wound healing, repairing skin cells already damaged from UV rays and free radicals. Its anti-inflammatory properties also help to soothe the skin.

Massage

While not a natural ingredient, it is an easy natural step that can be included in any natural skincare routine. Jade rollers are one of the best tools for facial massages. Their hard cool surface allows access to muscle and tissue pressure, working much like acupressure to improve circulation. With daily use, improvements should be seen in skin complexion and plumpness.
